Street Science
Science Steve visited SJV today with his Street Science show. We saw balloons exploding, liquids changing colour and we touched clouds made from dry ice. To finish off our amazing science experience we made a rocket and then we shot them into the air on the oval. WOW!

Bee-Bots visit 2S
This week we have been learning to give and follow instructions to land on a specific point. We have described the position of an object using map coordinates. 2S have been programming Bee-Bots, a bright yellow floor robot, and learning the language of direction and position.

Swimming lessons
Year 2 have been enjoying swimming lessons at the Manly Pool for the last few weeks. With only one more lesson to go we are keen to improve our swimming.

Fossils
2S have been learning about Information Reports and during our Literacy Group time we have been reading a variety of Information Reports on subjects like Mummies and Bridges. This week we read about Fossils and we even had a go at making our own fossil from play dough!
A special visitor
This week we had a special visitor to our classroom. Mrs McLean came to the 2S classroom and she had baby Sadie with her! We tried to be very quiet as Sadie was asleep.

Book Week
This week at SJV we have celebrated Book Week. The theme for Book Week 2015 was books light up our world. We have visited the Book Fair in the Library, walked in a book character parade and we have read some of the shortlisted books. It has been a great week of reading!

Raw Art
This week in 2S we had a visit from an artist from Raw Art. Phoebe helped us to make moths or butterflies using collage and paint. They look fabulous flying in our room!

Stradbroke Island excursion
2S travelled by water taxi to Stradbroke Island to learn about this beautiful place. We saw a scarred tree (a sacred meeting place), a midden, a place of ongoing fire and we met Matt who could do amazing things like make FIRE!

Be an Anthropologist!
Today Katrina Logan visited our classroom to help us to get ready for our excursion to Stradbroke Island next week. Katrina has invited everyone to become a member of the Quandamooka Anthropology Club but to do this we have to help solve the puzzles of people past and present and to make meaning of history.

Moreton Bay
We have been learning about Moreton Bay in Geography and History. Did you know that the aboriginal name for Moreton Bay is Quandamooka and there are 360 islands in total in the Bay. The islands closest to our school are St Helena Island and Green Island. We can see them both from our school!

Athletics Carnival

Father Frank visits
Father Frank accepted our invitation to visit our classroom to help us answer some questions we had about Saint John Mary Vianney. In our Religion lessons we have been learning about our Parish and the saint that gives us our school name. Father Frank was an expert about Saint John Vianney and we learnt some wonderful new facts about this very special and kind man.
The Rainbow Fish
As part of the Friends program we have listened to the story of the Rainbow Fish. The Rainbow Fish was the most beautiful fish in the ocean with gorgeous shiny scales but he had no friends. He discovers that by giving away his precious scales to other fish he begins to feel wonderful. After listening to the story we painted our very own Rainbow Fish and gave away scales to friends in our class.

Rolling Toy Test
2S have built some wonderful rolling toys from cardboard, plastic milk bottle tops, straws and wooden skewers. This week we tested our toys by using a push or pull to make them move.

Ditto Show
Today at SJV we had a visit from Ditto. Ditto's Keep Safe Adventure Show teaches children personal safety in a fun way. We learnt about:
- Yes and No Feelings
- Warning Signs
- Scared and Yucky Feelings
- Private Parts and Privacy
- It's OK to say NO if you don't feel safe
- What to do if you feel unsafe or unsure

Push and Pull Forces
We are still learning about Push and Pull forces in Science and this week we explored toys from around the world. Toys like hoops, Russian dolls, boomerangs, lego bricks and teddy bears all use push and pull forces to make them move. We even discovered a helicopter toy that has been around since the 1500's and used both forces to make it move.

Spinning toys
Today in Science we made a simple spinning toy out of cardboard and a pencil to investigate push and pull forces. Our toy looked like a Mammandur which is a spinning top made by the Guugu Yimmidhirr people of Cape Bedford in Queensland. Their spinning toy was made of beeswax and wood and they would have competitions to see how long their tops could spin.

Music Incursion
We heard the loudest music incursion this week at SJV! It was all about drumming and percussion instruments and the sounds these instruments could make when played in different ways. All students in Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 played an instrument to perform one very loud musical piece at the end.
Manly War Memorial Excursion
This week Year 2 classes walked to the Manly War Memorial in Richard Russell Park. The park is a beautiful place to remember all the men and women who have served in times of war.

Subtraction Word Problems
2S have been working hard this week in Maths Groups learning different strategies they can use with Subtraction Word Problems. We can count on, count back, draw the problem and write number sentences in different ways to help us work out the answer.

ANZAC Day
This week in Year 2 we have been learning about ANZAC Day which is on Saturday April 25th. ANZAC Day is a special day when we remember all of the men and women who have served their country in times of war. We read this great book about ANZAC Day which told the story of Jack and his grandfather and the time when they went to an ANZAC Day parade together.

Cross Country
Yesterday SJV participated in our school cross country at Memorial Park. Year 2's ran 500m around the park and it was a great race! Well done all runners.

Dance Cart Concert
Today SJV put on a fabulous concert for students, staff and families. The concert performed dances that students had been learning in Dance Cart lessons. 2S were great when they danced 'Putting on the Ritz'.

Glue Investigation
Today in Science we made a glue mixture by combining flour, water and salt. We used this mixture to stick fabric, foil and a plastic lid to paper.

Who are SJV?
Today we reflected on our learning for History. We thought about all of the new things we had learned about the history of our school and we created a Graffiti Wall where we placed one amazing fact that we had learnt about our school story.
