Lunch in the Past Day

2BP had a Lunch in the Past Day this week. Before the big day we spent some time looking at our lunch boxes and comparing them with what a lunch box in the past would have looked like. On the day we came to school dressed like we were from the 'olden days'. Our teachers for the day were Mrs Prim and Mrs Proper! At First Break we walked to a local park and spent the morning playing some old-fashioned games like Drop the Hanky and Follow the Leader. We had to pack a picnic lunch made from thick slices of bread with toppings like honey, jam, syrup or cheese and a piece of fruit. Lunches were packed in brown paper bags and not cling wrap. A highlight of the excursion was finding a baby possum who had fallen out of a tree. We rescued the little one and he is now being looked after by a local Vet.

Bread Making

Today 2Bp made bread in our classroom! We cheated a little and used a breadmaking machine but we spent time talking about how we would have made bread in the past without a machine and electric oven. We were amazed at how the ingredients of flour, salt, water and yeast changed into the most fantastic looking loaf of bread. Our classroom smelt like a bakers and it made our mouth's water! We also had a go at making butter using a container with a lid, cream and a couple of marbles. A great success and it also tasted wonderful. After Mrs B cut the bread students could put fresh butter, honey or syrup on top. There was not one little crumb left after everyone had a taste.

Book Character Day

Yesterday we had a special day where we could come dressed up as our favourite book character. All the children from prep to Year 7 dressed as a variety of different characters. Some characters that visited us for the parade where Snow White, Tashi, Mr Strong, Fairies, Wally from Where's Wally, Cat in the Hat, Captain Underpants, pirates, Mr Saucepan from The Faraway Tree, Cinderella, Indiana Jones, Ben 10 and the Year seven's came with Miss Frizzle in their magic school bus. It was a great parade with so many characters and prizes won for the best dressed in each year. We had activities with the rest of the school in our middle session where we had one of the short listed books read to us in our allocated classrooms and did a fun activity sheet afterwards. It was a great day with teachers and students having fun dressing as a book character.

The Way We Were

Our Integrated Unit for Term 4 is 'The Way We Were' where 2BP will be looking at our past and how our lives have changed over the years. We have set up a display table in the back of our classroom with some interesting old wares. Some of our parents went to school here and have brought in old school books, uniforms, class photos, sewing samples and newsletters. Other items include things like a typewriter, dial phone, hand beaters, a meat grinder, old cameras and even a John Paul Young record! This collection of old 'things' has added so much value and hands-on experience to our Unit that sometimes it's hard to put them down to start work at our desks!

We have been bouncing!

Well, this term is bouncing along beautifully!
We have been investigating bouncing balls!
Some great hypothesis work going on as well as children debate why some balls bounce more often than others. We know that the mass of the ball does not dictate the number of bounces...

2BP's Chinese Lunch

BubbleShare: Share photos - Find great Clip Art Images.

Yesterday 2BP went to Wynnum Garden Chinese Restaurant to have lunch with friends and family. We travelled by train and a short walk to arrive at the restaurant just in time - we were all so hungry! We ate a 3 course lunch including Spring Rolls, Fried Rice, Chicken and Vegetables and Deep Fried Icecream. YUMMY!!! While we ate we watched our China Photostories on the big screen and listened to Chinese music. The restaurant staff welcomed us in Chinese and we practiced some of the Chinese language that we have learnt this term. It was a wonderful, fantastic, excellent, awesome, delicious, fabulous, perfect, cool super, great excursion!

Today we had a visit from the SEAT (Spinal Awareness Team) people. We saw tow men in wheelchairs and both of them were called Wayne! They were very amusing and taught us to be safe and protect our spine. To do this we must wear seat belts, not rock on chairs, wear helmets and always check the depth before diving into any water!

We can't wait to hear what living in Malaysia is like - going to school, shopping, playing sport, meeting new friends, eating different foods and learning a new language. Here we are looking at the world map to find Malaysia.

Our Visit to the Ekka

On Friday the 8th of August, 2BP visited the Ekka along with a number of very helpful Mum's and Dad's. We caught the train to the Ekka and arrived just in time to have morning tea in the Enchanted Forest. Some of us took part in a Musical Statues game before we headed off to see some of the Pavilions - the Woolworths, Queensland Government, Agricultural and China displays. Some of us even managed to squeeze in a quick visit to the Animal Nursery to pat some baby animals. The highlight of the day had to be the Showbag Pavilion where we shopped for our favourite show bags. The train was very busy and crowded on the way back to Manly but we all managed to get a seat and chat about our very exciting day. We had a fantastic time at Ekka 08!

Some interesting facts that we discovered are:

  • grasshoppers hear with their knees
  • caterpillars eat their egg shells
  • moths use antennae to smell
  • the loudest insect is the male Cicada
  • fleas jump 200 times the length of their own body

New class member!

New member of the class!
Today one of the students found a beetle which turned out to be an earwig! We thought it might have been a female. Now, we think it might be a male after looking at the web photos. We are keeping it over night and put in the food that the web suggested it liked: grapes and grass!

Could this be true?

Very hot chilli .... I think!

MINIBEASTs :)

We have begun to learn about minibeasts and already the children have discoveder much!

I have learnt that minibeasts are small creatures that are invertibrates - do not have a backbone.

We have all got a pet minibeast that we keep on our desk! No, no do not fear they are plastic! They are cute and keep us interested and yet safe as we study them.

Already we as a class are beginning to notice there are many, many minibeasts everywhere!

Have you found anything interesting lately?
